The AAS also seeks early expressions of interest from institutions that would like to co-host the 2024 AAS-in-Asia conference—please see the guidelines below and contact AAS Executive Director Hilary Finchum-Sung, hvfinchum@asianstudies.org, to discuss further. There is no deadline for inquiries regarding the 2024 event.

The Association for Asian Studies

Founded in 1941, the Association for Asian Studies is a scholarly, non-profit professional association open to all persons interested in Asia and the study of Asia. With approximately 6,500 members worldwide, representing all the regions and countries of Asia and all academic disciplines, the AAS is the largest organization of its kind.

For 80 years, the AAS has held an annual conference each spring in North America. Open to all individuals holding an interest in Asian Studies, this annual meeting brings over 3,300 Asianists together to present and discuss the latest research in the field. Academics, university faculty, graduate students, and more attend over 400 panel sessions, a book exhibition, and film screenings, and partake in multiple networking and social functions.

What is AAS-in-Asia?

AAS developed the AAS-in-Asia conference to give our members and individuals the opportunity to participate in an Asia-based conference. Although smaller in size, these conferences include the same exciting features as the Annual Conference, including sessions, keynote speakers, book exhibits, and receptions. Since 2014, there have been seven AAS-in-Asia conferences, which have taken place in Singapore, Taipei, Kyoto, Seoul, New Delhi, Bangkok, and Kobe (virtual format). The conference in 2022 will be the 8th AAS-in-Asia conference.

Why Co-host AAS-in-Asia?

AAS-in-Asia represents an international community of Asian Studies scholars. Partnering with the AAS on the AAS-in-Asia conference:

  • provides an opportunity to expand scholarly networks and to strengthen our connections;
  • helps to break down remnants of west-centric perspectives in international scholarship and provides a platform within which true international partnerships can form;
  • raises both the global visibility of and prestige of your institution;
  • provides opportunities for students in local institutions to participate in an international conference and engage with other young scholars from many other counties;
  • provides an opportunity to promote local histories and culture.

The goal of this conference initiative is to build sustainable networks of Asian Studies scholars which will underscore partnerships and collaborations in Asian Studies far into the future.
