After 155 years of British colonial rule, Hong Kong will become a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of
China on July 1, 1997. It will become the Hong Kong SAR under the principle of “One Country/Two Systems,” a principle that Hong Kong’s future chief executive Tung Chee-hwa calls a “Ground-breaking concept that is remarkable in its origin, comprehensive in its development, and no doubt, challenging in its implementation” 1 (italics mine).
