Congratulations to AAS Member Kai Ostwald (University of British Columbia) and Steven Oliver (Yale-NUS College), who received the Best Paper Award from the American Political Science Association-Southeast Asia Politics Group. The Southwest and Western Conferences of the AAS will hold a joint regional meeting at Southern Methodist University on November 17 and 18, 2017. The CFP is now open; deadline for proposal submission is July 31.

Deceased Asianists

Ainslie T. Embree (1921-2017), historian of South Asia and former AAS President. The Indian Express has published a tribute to Professor Embree by former U.S. Ambassador to India Frank Wisner. A memorial service will be held on November 13, 2017 at Columbia University; obituary via the Washington Post.
