AAS Digital Dialogues: From Research to Recognition – Strategies for Cultivating Public Visibility as an Academic

This workshop will offer a roadmap for AAS members interested in extending their influence beyond scholarly circles. Publicist Nanda Dyssou will share her expertise on book publicity and media engagement for academic and crossover books, so attendees may learn practical strategies for promoting their research during a book promotion campaign. The book publicity landscape has changed dramatically over the past decade, and it is crucial that academics seeking to maximize their book’s reach familiarize themselves with current strategies for success.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  1. Best practices for promoting research and insights through media — traditional, digital and social.
  2. Techniques for articulating research to the public in accessible, compelling language in book talks, interviews, and op-eds.
  3. Guidance on identifying and collaborating with non-university organizations and cross-disciplinary conversation partners to foster meaningful public engagement.
  4. Tools and tactics for enhancing online visibility and influence.
  5. Field-specific coaching, aimed towards cultivating AAS members as dynamic public intellectuals and leaders in enriching public discourse on Asia and the study of Asia.

By integrating narrative crafting, media engagement strategies, and collaborative partnerships, this workshop aims to equip AAS members with the knowledge and confidence to draw more readers to their research and amplify their broader impact.
