The Vietnam Studies Group (VSG), a sub-committee of the Southeast Asia Council of the AAS, invites interested attendees at AAS 2019 to come to its Annual Business meeting, Friday, March 22, 7:30-8:30pm in Plaza Court 4 of the Sheraton Denver Downtown (conference hotel). This is a fantastic way to learn more about Vietnam Studies and meet colleagues.

The VSG is also now accepting submissions for its annual Graduate Student Paper Prize competition. This competition has helped to encourage direct involvement of graduate students in the growth of Vietnamese studies and supports their professional development. Entries may come from full or part time graduate students, regardless of disciplinary specialization, but authors must be (or become) dues-paying members of VSG (student rate is $10). Preference will be given to sole-authored papers based on original field, archival, and/or statistical research. However, thematic reviews that critically synthesize existing literature on a particular topic related to Vietnamese studies will also be considered. The winner receives a $500 prize and a one-year subscription to the Journal of Vietnamese Studies, as well as a yearlong membership in VSG. If the winner attends AAS and the VSG meeting to pick up their award in person, they may be eligible to also receive a $200 travel award. Papers may be written in English or Vietnamese and must be submitted by Jan 20, 2019 11:59pm (Hawaii Standard Time) to dbiggs@ucr.edu.

Contact dbiggs@ucr.edu for questions about the Paper Prize or mbodemer@calpoly.edu for questions about VSG or the meeting. More info about VSG can be found at its website.

Registration for #AAS2019 in Denver, Colorado is still open. After a successful introduction of GREEN registration rates in Washington, D.C. earlier this year, we are pleased to offer them again in Denver. Those who GO GREEN will save $10 on their conference registration; they will NOT receive a copy of the print program.

Our conference room block at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel is going fast! We expect the block to be full by early January, so please don’t delay—reserve your room at the conference rate as soon as possible.

The full conference program is now available online. We have added an exciting new conference offering this year—the Digital Technologies Expo. This two-day event will feature over 30 presentations and hands-on demonstrations by Asian Studies scholars working with new technologies in their research. We hope that all conference attendees will make some time to stop by and check it out!

We are pleased to offer financial support—a maximum of $250 per family—on a reimbursement basis to panel participants in need of professional childcare services during the conference in Denver. Funds are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so please contact the AAS as soon as possible to express your interest in this program. More information and contact information is available at the conference website.
