Call for Applications: Editor, AAS Asia Shorts Book Series

The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is searching for a new Editor for its Asia Shorts book series. Asia Shorts (a short-title series launched in 2018) advances important original research on Asia, brings leading scholarship on Asia to audiences beyond the academy, and supports teaching and learning in Asian Studies. The AAS publications program has a strong record of innovation and achievement in recent years, with unprecedented numbers of new titles released, a new distribution agreement with Columbia University Press, expansion into ebook and Open Access formats, timely collaborations with the Journal of Asian Studies and Education About Asia, and enhanced marketing initiatives. More information about the series is available at the Asia Shorts page on our website.

The Editor, with assistance from members of the AAS Editorial Board, is responsible for soliciting and acquiring approximately 4–6 manuscripts each year for the series, ensuring the academic quality and consistency of the series, and working with authors and AAS staff through the review, production, and marketing processes. The Editor also plays a key role (in close consultation with the AAS Editorial Board) in charting future directions for the AAS book series, within the larger context of the mission and strategic priorities of the AAS and trends in academic publishing in Asian Studies.

The Editor will work closely with the AAS Publications Manager on all aspects of the series and will collaborate with the editors of the Key Issues in Asian Studies series, the Journal of Asian Studies, and Education About Asia, and with the AAS Program Committee. The Editor serves as an ex officio member of the AAS Editorial Board, reports to the Editorial Board on the status of the book series, and can draw upon the expertise of Editorial Board members in vetting proposals, soliciting manuscripts, and otherwise supporting the series. The Editor is expected to attend the two annual meetings of the AAS Editorial Board, in the spring (in person at the AAS Annual Conference) and the fall (by video conference).

The new Editor will serve a five-year term, renewable once, and will receive an annual honorarium. It is anticipated that the new Editor will begin their duties in the late summer or early fall of 2021.
