Congratulations to AAS Member Bin Xu (Emory University), who is co-winner of the Mary Douglas Award for Best Book from the Culture Section of the American Sociological Association for his 2017 Cornell University Press monograph, The Politics of Compassion: The Sichuan Earthquake and Civic Engagement in China. Congratulations also to AAS Member Stephen Little (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support the development of an exhibition on the art and history of Korean calligraphy.


This past May, the planning committee for our third Emerging Fields in the Study of Asia workshop met in Ann Arbor and began to work on preparations for next spring’s event. The theme for this cycle of the program is “Law, Society, and Justice,” and applications for the May 2019 workshop will be accepted until October 1. The AAS thanks the Henry Luce Foundation for its generous support of our multi-year “Emerging Fields” initiative.


Education About Asia seeks manuscripts for special thematic sections in upcoming issues of the magazine. The section themes and manuscript submission deadlines are:

“What Should We Know About Asia?” (Winter 2018 issue) – August 20, 2018

“Schools in Asia” (Spring 2019 issue) – November 30, 2018

“Entrepreneurship in Asia” (Fall 2019 issue) – April 20, 2019

“Asian Literature in the Humanities and Social Sciences” (Winter 2019 issue) – August 1, 2019

Every issue also includes non-thematic essays, reviews, and teaching resources. If you would like more information about becoming an Education About Asia contributor, please see the instructions for authors at the EAA website.


Anyone planning to apply for an AAS First Book Subvention should consult the eligibility and application guidelines at our website. The next deadline for the program is September 1.


The Southeast Conference of the AAS will meet January 18-20, 2019 at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Paper and panel abstracts must be submitted by October 31, 2018. The SEC/AAS also seeks nominations for its annual book and article prize competitions, which should be submitted by August 31, 2018.
